A Crowd of One

A Crowd of One

Last week we looked at two groups who gathered around Jesus as He preached His Sermon on the Mount. We saw "the crowd" and His disciples. This week, let's look at another interesting part of Matthew 5:1-2.

As a reminder:

Matthew 5:1-2 reads: "Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and He began to teach them." (NIV)

When Jesus saw the crowd He sat down and began to teach them. One might simply read this and pass by with out another thought. However, Jesus is being an example for us today. When Jesus saw the crowds gathering, He took the opportunity to teach them how to be successful and happy. Notice Jesus did not say follow me or you are going to die and go to hell. Jesus engaged them in a subject that was important to them, how to be happy and successful in this life. He shared with them what is truly important in this life. Who does not want to know the answer to these questions?

How many opportunities have you and I had when crowds are gathered that we could have shared with them the true secret of life? Crowds do not have to be hundreds of people. A crowd can be a few co-workers in the breakroom, classmates gathered in a study session or even one person who is curious or struggling through life.

If we look around, God will put before us the opportunities to share the teachings of Jesus with others. Even if it is a "Crowd of One." Will you take the opportunity today that God has given you?
